Adele's Musical Career

The British singing sensation and global pop superstar Adele was born in 1988 in Tottenham, London. Her parents separated when Adele was only two years old. In 1997, her mother decided to relocate to the scenic seaside town of Brighton on the south coast of England only to return to London just two years later.

Adele attended the Brit School for Performing Arts and Technology from which she graduated in 2006. After posting various videos of her music performances on social networking site Myspace, she was pinpointed by XL Recordings as a potentially brilliant music artist. Her big breakthrough came with the release of her first album in 2008, entitled 19. The album is a soulful take on Adele dealing with heartbreak from a previous failed relationship. The success of 19 catapulted Adele to global fame and even received a prestigious Mercury Prize nomination.

Adele has found major success in America, aided by an appearance on Saturday Night Live. Her performance of hit single Chasing Pavements was viewed by an audience of 17 million. Almost overnight, Adele was propelled into stardom in America. Her success continued and in 2009 she won a Grammy award for Best New Artist, and another for her single Chasing Pavements. She released her second studio album entitled 21 in 2011. The album featured a similar theme to her first, but was highly influenced by the American country and blues music she was exposed to during her 2008/2009 tour of the U.S.

She had to cancel a planned tour of the U.S in 2011 due to a vocal chord haemorrhage, which she required surgery for. Adele returned from her surgery to perform at the 2012 Grammy Awards, where she performed a clean sweep and won all six gongs that she was nominated for.

In late 2012, Adele also collaborated with producer Paul Epworth to record "Skyfall", the theme song for the James Bond movie of the same name. The track became the first Bond theme song to win an Oscar, with Adele performing at the 2013 event. She then took a two year hiatus from music to focus on her personal life.

"Hello", the debut song from her third album, was released in October 2015 and went straight to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. The full album was released in November 2015.

Adele and her partner Simon Konecki, founder of charity Drop4Drop, live in London with their son Angelo. For the fourth year running, the north Londoner has topped the Sunday Times list of the world's richest musicians under 30, but despite her success, she retains her sense of humour and down-to-earth nature. Adele cites artists such as the Spice Girls and Ella Fitzgerald as huge influences in her passion and love for music.
