Winner of nine Tony awards including Best Musical, numerous other awards and widespread critical acclaim, 'The Book of Mormon' is entertaining from start to finish and looks set to stay on Broadway for the foreseeable future.
The show tells the story of two well-meaning Mormon missionaries who are dispatched to a remote village in northern Uganda, which is under the control of a brutal warlord. The two rather naive Mormons attempt to share the Book of Mormon with the locals but with little success as the villagers have considerably more pressing concerns than religion and are unimpressed with the scripture. The two Mormons, Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, are disconcerted to discover that the Africa they experience could not be more different to the Africa they were expecting, the Africa of 'The Lion King'. Difficult issues are repeatedly raised throughout the story, such as female circumcision, the irrelevance of religion in modern Africa, the arrogance of the West, drought and AIDS. There are bucketfuls of humor throughout the show; often largely at the expense of The Lion King and self-aggrandizing celebrity do-gooders.
The show is consistently politically incorrect but is undoubtedly one of the funniest shows ever written. There are lots of references and recurring jokes throughout the show about 'The Lion King', 'Lord of the Rings and 'Star Wars' - one of the elders has never actually read the Book of Mormon and makes up stories using the aforementioned as his inspiration. 'The Book of Mormon' will be loved by anyone who enjoys a good old-fashioned musical. The themes are edgy but the songs are well-written and well-structured, and the lyrics are catchy. It is not a show for children, but is a highly-entertaining and high-energy comedy for adults, and is definitely well-worth the price of the tickets. There is swearing, there is raunchy adult humor, and the show does mock religion, but the show is enormously popular for a reason.
